Cultural Relevance
The cultural relevance of this topic is noted by the fact that "almost 20% of the United States population” is multilingual and the number of multilingual children is on the rise (McCabe et al., 2013). Furthermore, “nearly 25% of children in the United States come from immigrant families” and are a rapidly growing population (McCabe et al., 2013). Multilingual children and families in the United States are often low-income so it is important that these children and families are supported in the classroom.
It is culturally relevant and important that neurodiverse children are included in teacher supported multilingual learning. Children “with atypical development such as autism” are not “adversely” affected by multilingual learning environments (Grasso, 2023). Furthermore, neurodiverse children’s language development will not be delayed by the presence of multiple languages in their learning environment or daily life.
